Local Pathways Fellowship 2021 Graduates

The 2021 Cohort of the Local Pathways Fellowship graduated this past November. Seventy-nine fellows from 35 countries successfully completed the program and received a certificate of completion. The overall cohort graduation rate reached ∼80 percent.

A year ago, 100 young urban optimists were selected for the 2021 Local Pathways Fellowship, a 10-month training program that equips young urban leaders with the tools and resources needed to advance problem-solving for sustainable development at the local level. Traditionally, the fellows developed practical solutions that tackle the challenges around SDG 11.

Fellows completed the Sustainable Cities Cities developed by Aromar Aromar Revi and connected through the LPF webinar series with representatives from City Councils , C40, Hack for Earth Foundation, World Bank, UN Environment Programme, Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance, MOVE, and CityAdapt. But most importantly they developed a project of their own that improves the quality of life in the city they represent.

"At LPF we guide fellows through the development of a project starting by asking them to choose a topic to focus on based on their expertise. Throughout the 10 months of the fellowship, they work on research, connecting with stakeholders, developing the idea and prototyping it. Ideally, they implement at least a pilot.” -- Ana Ynestrillas, Local Pathways Fellowship Program Lead.

Examples of the 2021 cohort projects were presented at the Zero Emissions Solution Conference alongside COP26 in early November. Ranging from solutions that reduce emissions  and improve air quality in Islamabad, Pakistan to the actualization of the database of public transport systems in Toluca, Mexico through the digitalization of public transport routes.

This year LPF launched a mentorship program designed to connect Local Pathways Alumni with incoming fellows for knowledge sharing and networking purposes. Powered by alumni fellows from 2018, 2019, and 2020. The mentors guided their mentees through the fellowship cycle and helped them in the project development process. Therefore we want to give a big thanks to our first group of LPF mentors on supporting making the  2021 cohort a success.
