Projects sneak peek: What SDG-good 2020 Local Pathways fellows are designing for their cities

2020 Local Pathways fellows are about to graduate. And while they are working on finalizing their SDG 11 proposals, we are excited to give you a sneak peek at some of their exceptional projects. Let us know which one you are excited to see implemented the most! 

"Clean up" Calabar by Goodness Odey from Calabar, Nigeria

Clean up Calabar aims to sensitize community members in the city on the need to ensure environmental sanitization through personal and collaborative efforts, as well as gradually revive the cleanliness lifestyle of the city. The project supports SDG target 11.6. 

"Why Bike" by Caterina Laurenzi from Milan, Italy 

Her project focuses on spreading the values and cultures of urban cycling among young generations. Through a communication and sensibilization campaign, leveraging the multiplier effect that children and teenagers can have, Why Bike aims to promote and strengthen sustainable mobility in Milan, Italy. The project supports SDG target 11.6. 

"Leaving No One Behind: Creating social infrastructure through effective plastic waste management" by Priyanka Walanj from Mumbai, India

The project aims to reduce pollution generated through Multi-Layer Plastic and create social infrastructure using SOCIOBRICKS for waste pickers and their children through S3-Model. The project supports SDG target 11.6. 

"Community-based agritourism to link rural food producers with urban consumers" by Sofia Cavalleri from Bangkok, Thailand

COVID-19 has disrupted the complex linear food systems in Thailand. As a response, community-based agritourism practice models have emerged in Bangkok city-regional food system to support sustainable social, economic, and environmental links between urban, peri-urban, and rural areas, localizing SDG target 11.a.

"Tracing a case for blue public space in Tiohtiá:ke, Montreal" by Cyrielle Noël from Montréal, Canada

This project seeks to: 

1. Refine the concept of blue public space within the context of urban recreation spaces and examine the link with fostering ocean literacy 

2.Trace the case for blue public space by consulting with planning professionals and determining push and pull factors within the policy landscape 

3.Create a blueprint for the design and delivery of a blue public space tailored to the Montréal context. 

The project supports SDG target 11.6. 

"Flooded Stories of Belo Horizonte" by Cibele Patrícia Damasceno de Oliveira from Belo Horizonte, Brazil

This project aims to improve data collection on flood risk in Belo Horizonte through the proposition of a social-environmental indicator to guide decision-makers on prioritizing investments in flood preventing infrastructure. It is also a goal of this project to create a documentary series of photographic and textual records of the "flooded stories of Belo Horizonte" through interviews with the affected community. The project supports SDG target 11.5.

"Community inclusiveness through participatory planning" by Shweta Gandhi from Dubai, UAE

The project identifies the challenges associated with the participation in planning decision-making, especially in the non-patrimonial system followed in UAE, further aiming to initiate community inclusiveness through participatory planning identified unprecedented urban development in the UAE (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah). The project supports SDG target 11.3.

"Unlocking the potential of smart city thinking in Melbourne" by Tony Luo from Melbourne, Australia

This research assesses the role and potential of smart cities and precincts. It follows a process of understanding the driving factors for a smart city and associated benefits and risks for Melbourne and puts forward a guiding framework for the development of smart city initiatives in Melbourne. The project supports SDG target 11.a.1.
